Communications Internship

The communications team is an integral part of the organization.  Interns on the Communications team work on a variety of projects.

Events
The Center organizes and hosts a large number of events to promote the work of our Fellows and staff. Events range from large conferences that last several days and involve dozens of speakers to press events to launch reports and debates or book events on issues affecting the policy community.  Interns on this team are involved in each aspect of this work.

Media Booking and Product Placement
The Center has a dedicated team assigned to book our Fellows, staff, and affiliated experts for television and radio interviews around the country. This team also works to place Center material in national newspapers and magazines. Interns on this team are involved in each aspect of this work.

Press Team
Beyond booking fellows and other experts for TV, radio, and print journalists, the communications team also is responsible for creating and carrying out comprehensive communication plans to coincide with Center events and publications. These plans include microtargeting members of the press, creating and sending out press releases and advisories, incorporating video and audio in report releases, and providing general media relations support for center fellows and staff. The Center is committed to taking its message to diverse communities. To that end, targeted and comprehensive communications work is done to reach communities of color. Fully bilingual interns are needed to assist with media booking in ethnic media press.

Reel Progress
Reel Progress is a new progressive film series sponsored by the Center for American Progress. On a monthly basis, the Center hosts free screenings of progressive films, which are followed by provocative panel discussions with leading public policy experts and filmmakers. Interns will be involved in all aspects of Reel Progress, from selecting films to organizing screenings and producing events.

Research Team
The American Progress research team works on both rapid-response and long-term research and communications projects. The team’s core products are The Progress Report and ThinkProgress.org. The Progress Report, American Progress’s signature product, is a daily newsletter reaching over 90,000 subscribers with a progressive analysis of the news. ThinkProgress.org is one of the web’s top progressive blogs, with original and continual research on the day’s hottest news. Interns assigned to assist the research team will be asked to do extensive researching, writing, editing, fact-checking, monitoring of news stories, blogging on Think Progress, and other tasks as assigned. Our team looks for interns with strong research and writing skills.

Speechwriting
The Speechwriting team is responsible for writing speeches, statements, major reports, op-eds, and presentations for the executive office of the Center for American Progress. The primary responsibilities of an intern working with this team will be researching, writing, and editing assignments as determined by the executive speechwriter and the deputy speechwriter. Applicants for this internship should be able to complete writing assignments on tight deadlines and have excellent research and writing abilities.
