Summary
Campus Progress, the youth outreach arm of American Progress, has an immediate opening for a designer to join our staff as an Online Communications Associate. The Online Communications Associate will work with the Online Communications Manager in conceptualizing, creating, and implementing all design aspects of Campus Progress’s online presence and print collateral. This includes an organization website and online magazine, campaign websites, and fliers, tool kits, signage, and other printed materials.
Campus Progress works with and for young people to promote progressive solutions to key political and social challenges. Through programs in activism, journalism, and events, Campus Progress engages a diverse group of young people nationwide, inspires them to embrace progressive values, and helps them to make their voices heard. We place a strong emphasis on creative communications, design, and multimedia, and we work with a wide range of well-known creative artists from music, spoken word, art, film, and design.
Applicants should have experience creating and maintaining web content and should be able to contribute and execute innovative, compelling ideas for content and presentation. The candidate should also have the marketing sense to know why you need three ads if you have three messages.
This position requires diligence to check all work for accuracy and completeness and the ability to maintain strict deadlines. Applicants must enjoy detail-oriented work and troubleshooting while developing project ideas and driving them to completion.
The position will have a core set of regular responsibilities and additional opportunities to pursue projects tailored to the individual's areas of expertise and interests.
Responsibilities:
- Create graphics and layouts, including email templates, website templates, web content, logos, postcards, marketing brochures, fliers, and invitations.
- Support the online communications team in creating, developing, and maintaining websites.
- Organize and maintain master files for all web and print project.
- Keep up to date on design trends and practices for continued enhancement of Campus Progress materials and websites.
- Work with the online communications manager to prioritize workload to meet deadlines provided.
- Manage workload to keep projects on timelines and project teams aware of statu.
- Develop Campus Progress visual identity and style guide.
- Assist with day-to-day updates to keep websites and online magazine content current and user centered.
- Provide general web formatting support and training.
- Contribute ideas for multimedia and interactive content to increase the reach of Campus Progress’s programs and attract and retain engaged audiences.
Qualifications and requirements:
- Web development skills—Ability to hand code HTML and CSS. Experience with an open-source CMS, such as Expression Engine or Wordpress. Comfortable on a Mac platform.
- Graphic design skills—Demonstrated proficiency with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Experience working with printers.
- Project management skills—Ability to manage tasks and workflow and work with outside vendors to meet deadlines. Strong attention to detail.
- Marketing sense—Ability to see communications from the user’s perspective—to step outside of the organization’s perspective to thoroughly navigate all websites and emails to ensure effective communication and an intuitive experience for the end user.
- Commitment to Campus Progress’s mission and goals.
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, web design, visual communications, or other related field.
- At least one year of full-time work experience in an office setting.
