Director of Development

Reports to: Senior Vice President, Development

Position classification: Exempt, Full-time

Summary:

The Center for American Progress has an immediate opening for a Director of Development. The Director of Development will be responsible for planning, developing, and administering fundraising and associated activities including donor prospecting, generating proposals to foundations and corporations, and coordinating annual and special events associated with the Center for American Progress. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, the Director will also be responsible for the daily management of the development team and supervision of its staff. The successful candidate will network, build and maintain successful relationships with board members, donors, prospective donors, foundations, and volunteers.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a multi-year fundraising plan that includes major donors, special events, foundation and corporate giving, and other activities to raise the organization’s annual operating budget and contribute to the reserve
  • Manage and expand the major donor program. Responsible for prospecting, cultivating, renewing, and upgrading major gifts
  • Cultivate, manage, and expand foundation and corporate relations, including writing of grants and project proposals in coordination with the Policy and Fellows programs and overseeing American Progress Business Alliance activities
  • Explore the potential of planned giving or other long-term funding strategies
  • Play an integral part in institutional communications, including Web site, small donor solicitations, and donor newsletters
  • Ensure the confidentiality of all donor information with established procedures developed, maintained, and enforced
  • Manage the daily operations of the team by directly supervising its staff

Requirements:

  • Drafts compelling communications about the organization’s work to diverse audiences, including major donors, prospects, foundations, and corporations
  • Makes decisions, and exhibits sound and accurate judgment
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written skills
  • Manages staff and possesses strong ability to prioritize work activities
  • Works under pressure/tight deadlines
  • Ensures compliance with all state and federal fundraising laws and regulations
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and ideals
  • Local and national travel required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in fundraising for non-profits
  • A minimum of five years experience managing development staff
  • Proven track record of fundraising success and staff management
  • Non-profit fundraising experience required
  • Experience in fundraising for both 501 (c) (3) and 501 (c) (4) non-profit organizations strongly desired
