Enough Director of Communications

Summary

Enough, a project of American Progress to end genocide and crimes against humanity, seeks a candidate for Communications Director. Enough’s long-term goal is to encourage and build the capacity of a standing constituency to effectively confront mass violence against innocent civilians. This position is at American Progress in Washington, D.C.

Enough has an immediate opening for Communications Director. The Communications Director will be responsible for directing internal and external communications, effectively managing an already strong professional staff, working with the team to create advanced communication strategies and implementation plans, managing active and reactive earned media work for Enough, creating and maintaining strong relationships with the press and non-traditional media, and supporting press releases, op-ed submissions, and alerts highlighting Enough. Further, the Communications Director will ensure that Enough communications efforts are coordinated with the American Progress Communications team. This is a senior position requiring at least ten years of media and communications experience and strong management and interpersonal skills. Media, strategic communications, or political advocacy experience and knowledge of international affairs and Africa are preferred, and this individual will play a key role in coordinating Enough’s dynamic media presence with its policy work and activism.

  • Raise awareness of the Enough project through a variety of strategic communications to maximize electronic and print media, and widen product distribution and knowledge of Enough.
  • Work directly with the Director of Special Media, the Director of Online Communications and the Associate Director of Press Relations to develop high-impact media planning and overarching media strategy to support both the overall Enough brand and Enough’s associated campaigns.
  • Manage all Enough media relations and communications. Ensure that Enough communications programs are appropriately coordinated with the American Progress Communications team.
  • Continue expansion of Enough communications to maximize the synergy between Enough’s work in policy, activism, and communications.
  • Develop and manage administrative duties, including overseeing communications department personnel, contracts, and budgets.
  • Liaise with the Center’s legal department on copyright issues and permissions.
  • Work to create and continue lasting relationships with high-profile media.
  • Placement of high-profile op-eds, features, or other materials.
  • Pitching to broadcast producers and print reporters and continuous development of new media contacts and media lists for the organization.
  • Liaise with communications partners and other relevant organizations and institutions.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years senior media management experience.
  • Degree in journalism, international relations, political science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex media projects on deadline and under pressure.
  • Strong sense of pro-active strategic communications, promotions and marketing.
  • Experience with developing and managing contracts and promotion budgets.
  • Adept team player with good interpersonal and managerial skills.
  • A high level of personal energy, dependability, and commitment.
  • Superb organization skills, including the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Strong copyediting and proofing skills.
  • The ability to organize, develop, and execute creative strategies in a fast-paced and demanding setting.
  • An advanced understanding of the interrelationship between policy, the legislative and executive branches, the media, and grassroots networks is a plus.
  • Experience working with national advocacy organizations; international experience, women’s rights, and knowledge of Africa and human rights a plus.
  • Ability to advance creative approaches to increase media exposure in soft and hard news media, print media, broadcast media, and online communications.
