Associate Director of Major Gifts

Summary

The Associate Director of Major Gifts executes the major donor fundraising efforts as a senior fundraiser in the Development Department. S/he engages the institution's largest individual donors in the work and impact of American Progress while expanding the major donor file to include new supports. This position is ideal for a fundraiser who focuses on the bottom line and is creative. S/he works closely with Director of Development on the department-wide strategy for meeting the organization's annual fundraising goal.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Implement a major gifts plan to retain and renew current donors while identifying and acquiring prospective donors.
  • Serve as a primary contact and make direct solicitations. This includes executing call time, attending donor meetings and events, and cultivating relationships with current and prospective donors.
  • Manage senior staff and principals’ fundraising travel, meetings, and calls. Includes up-staffing when appropriate.
  • Review fundraising materials distributed to current and prospective major donors, including but not limited to letters, emails, newsletters, proposals, PowerPoint presentations, and reports.
  • Directly supervise Major Gifts Officer(s) and indirectly manage junior staff and interns.
  • Work with Director of Development to establish and regularly monitor revenue and cash flow projections.
  • Create opportunities for board members and individual donors to raise money and support their fundraising efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on major gifts activities germane to their policy area/department and support their fundraising efforts.
  • Support the strategic and operational planning within the Development Department as appropriate.  This includes managing to a workplan and measuring the effectiveness of major gifts fundraising efforts by agreed-upon metrics.

Requirements:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and work as a member of a team.
  • Capacity to understand complex and unfamiliar subjects.

Qualifications:

  • Five to seven years of major gifts experience or comparable direct donor contact work.
  • Proven track record of soliciting and securing five- and six-figure gifts from individual donors.
  • Experience managing programs, timelines, budgets, and staff.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel.
  • A B.A./B.S. or equivalent work experience.
  • Familiarity with 501 (c)(3) and 501 (c)(4) regulations is desired.
  • Proficiency in SalesForce is a plus.
  • Must support the mission of American Progress and be committed to a broad progressive agenda.
