Special Assistant for National Security

Summary:
The Center for American Progress has an immediate opening for a Special Assistant for National Security. The National Security Special Assistant will be largely responsible for organizing meetings and events, managing schedules, researching national security policy issues, proofreading, and editing documents. The Assistant will also assist other members of the National Security department under the direction of the Senior Vice President.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide administrative, management, and research support for the Senior Vice President for National Security and International Policy
- Prepare analytical, comparative critiques of national security policy in coordination with the Center’s NSIP team
- File, proofread, and edit documents
- Exercise judgment on priority of messages, meetings, and incoming materials from principals and others
- Write weekly e-newsletter compiling the Center’s columns, backgrounders, and talking points dealing with national security
- Provide logistical support for team meetings, delivery of materials to Capitol Hill, and events, including assisting with set-up, registration, and break down
- Serve as the team’s intern coordinator, reviewing applications, interviewing, hiring, and supervising interns
- Serve as team point person for the rest of the Center and outside groups
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Knowledge of U.S. foreign and national security policy
- Knowledge of issues related to Pakistan, Afghanistan, and terrorism preferred
- Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills
- Ability to plan ahead, prioritize, and organize in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
- Ability to work long hours on occasion
- Thorough knowledge of MS Word, LexisNexis, Excel, and the Internet
- Team player
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Experience working with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) non-profit organizations a plus
