Steve Heibein, Vice President for Technology
Steve Heibein is Vice President for Technology at American Progress. Formerly the CEO of StreamCenter, a webcasting company, he has been at the forefront of developments in computer and Internet technology since 1985. Heibein began his technology career at Hewlett Packard, where he was a Unix System Engineer and Network Specialist working on the nascent Internet. Joining Silicon Graphics in their heyday, he became their Emerging Technology Manager. In that role he was responsible for creating innovative solutions for unique customer needs including telemedicine, video broadcasting, large-scale web hosting, data mining, virtual reality, and high-performance computing.
Heibein served as Technology VP or CTO for several online publishing companies, leading engineering teams in the creation and operation of some of the most popular news and information websites, including WashingtonPost.com, Newsweek.com, and the inaugural Web site for the Smithsonian Institute.
Prior to his technology career, Heibein was a principal in an architecture firm focused on solar and energy efficient design. His firm designed hundreds of solar buildings across the United States, and he was a published researcher and frequent lecturer on solar power.
