Luz Urbáez Weinberg

A communications professional, public speaker, published writer and mother of three, Luz Urbáez Weinberg was elected to the City of Aventura Commission on March 1st, 2005 making history when she took 62% of the vote, winning outright on first round and becoming the youngest, and the first Hispanic ever to serve the City of Aventura Commission. She has served as councilwoman and vice mayor since 2005, and represents the City at local, state and national events. Luz currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Hispanics Elected to Local Office (HELO) Constituency Group of the National League of Cities, and is a proud member of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO).

Outside her public life, Luz possesses over 15 years of professional experience in the legal and healthcare arena. She currently serves as V.P. Operations, managing a large Neurology practice that treats accident-related injuries with four rehabilitation centers. She is also Director of Marketing and Media Relations for The Aelion Firm, handling the numerous high-profile civil rights cases of the firm. Luz previously served as spokesperson and Marketing/P.R. Director for H.C.A.'s Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. Luz has also been a freelance writer for many years, and has had over 400 of her English and Spanish articles published.

After earning an A.A. degree at Miami-Dade College in 1992, Luz began her career as Deputy Director of Psychological Associates of Miami, Inc., the private practice of former Miami Beach Mayor and renowned Forensic Psychologist Dr. Leonard Haber. For over ten years, Luz was second in command, assisting with psychological interviews, psychological tests, record review and analysis, trial consultation, jury selection, mock-trials and focus groups, and the writing of over 5,000 psychological evaluation reports to judges, public defenders, prosecutors and private attorneys. In 2002, Luz completed her Bachelors degree in Psychology at Florida International University with Magna Cum Laude honors while working full time and raising her three children.

Over the last twenty years, Luz has been an active member of the South Florida community - volunteering, serving on boards, helping to raise more than $300,000.00 for several education and healthcare charities, and speaking at various community and governmental events. She has received numerous awards for her professional and charitable endeavors, including a 2003 "Outstanding Community Service" award by the Miami-Dade Community Action Agency and a 2006 "Up & Comer: Marketing Category" award by The South Florida Business Journal.

Luz lives in Aventura with her children: 15½-year old Jonathan, 14-year old Jessica, and 8-year old Justin.
