Mitt Romney

What should be the role of human rights in U.S foreign policy? What should the United States do about human rights violations in places such as Burma, China, Pakistan, and Russia?
Romney argues that the UN Human Rights Council is a good example of current failures because they have condemned Israel nine times, but have remained “virtually silent” on governments of Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, and Sudan. Because of this he thinks we should reform the UNHRC with the understanding that if they continue to be inactive or behave hypocritically, we will unite with other nations to promote change and defend human rights.
Romney would reconsider his support of the UN if the UN does not take a strong stand against Iran and its president. He argues that the UN should confront President Ahmandinejad about the human rights abuses within the country and that President Ahmandinejad should be arrested according to the genocide convention.
Romney has also stated that he believes we should work with China, but continue pressuring them about human rights issues.
What should the United States do to stop the genocide in Darfur?
Romney has spoken out against genocide in general, but has no stated position on the genocide in Darfur. He has divested from companies doing business in Iran, but to date has not divested from companies working in Sudan.
When, if ever, should the United States engage in military action to stop genocide or ethnic cleansing?
No stated position found.
Should the United States close the prison camp in Guantanamo? If so, what should be done with the prisoners there?
Romney would like to keep Guantanamo open and is quoted as saying “we ought to double Guantanamo.” He also argues that Guantanamo is a better place for terrorists than on American soil because they don’t get access to lawyers.
Are there any circumstances for when torture or extreme techniques of interrogation is appropriate?
Romney does not approve of torture, but does approve of “enhanced interrogation techniques.”
Should provisions about labor rights be included in future trade agreements?
Romney advocates free trade and is against protectionism, but does not discuss labor rights.
How can the United States best promote democracy around the world?
Romney believes America must lead an international coalition that promotes secular education, modern financial and economic policies, international trade, and human rights.
He argues that “there have to be the underpinnings of democracy: education, health care, people recognizing they live in a place that has the rule of law.” He has said that efforts to spread democracy should continue, not just to spread votes, but to encourage people in the world to have the benefits we enjoy and to welcome democracy as a “campaign of values.” He wants a “campaign of values combined with our strong arms, speaking softly but carrying a strong stick.”
Position on ICC ratification.
Romney authored a letter to the UN that argues that President Ahmadinejad of Iran should be arrested under the Genocide Convention if he were to enter the United States.
