Congressman Dale E. Kildee

Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) is a senior member of the House Committee on Education and Labor, serving as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education. Kildee was a teacher for 10 years prior to beginning his political career, and since being elected to Congress in 1976, has made improving education policy a central focus of his work. He has consistently supported elementary and secondary schools and public school funding. Kildee has also helped to effect reforms to the Higher Education Act that increased the Pell Grant and lowered interest rates on need-based student loans to enable more students to attend college. In 2007, Kildee was the chief sponsor of the Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act, which targeted new funding for teacher salaries and professional development and prioritized Early Head Start services for infants and toddlers. Kildee also has been a leader in efforts to modernize, renovate, and repair our nation's schools to help ensure that students, teachers, and principals have state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly learning facilities.
