Senator Herb Kohl

Herb Kohl was elected to the Senate in 1988 and re-elected to a fourth six-year term in 2006. Kohl was born and raised in Milwaukee, where he attended public school. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1956 and a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University in 1958.

During his time in office, Senator Kohl has been recognized as a champion of education for all children. As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, including the subcommittee with jurisdiction over the Department of Education, he has advocated for increased federal investments in educational programs ranging from Title I and IDEA to higher education programs such as TRIO and Pell Grants. Additionally, Kohl was the author of legislation to expand the school breakfast program and a strong supporter of child nutrition programs and after school programs.
