Progressive Local Policies to Rebuild the Middle Class

12:00 - 1:15 PM EST

Progressive leaders in city governments are taking a number of steps to build an economy that works for everyone, and they have ambitious plans for additional reforms. They are striving to create jobs, boost incomes, cut costs for middle-class necessities, lower the risk of falling behind, and advance opportunity and fair treatment for all. With federal gridlock making congressional action more difficult, the progressive agenda for these laboratories of democracy is taking on ever greater importance.

Please join the Center for American Progress Action Fund for a discussion with Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Mayor Bill Peduto of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Héctor Figueroa—president of 32BJ Service Employees International Union, the largest property services union in the country—about what cities can do to increase mobility, strengthen the middle class, and get the country back on track to broadly shared prosperity. Joel Rogers, director of COWS (Center on Wisconsin Strategy), will also present a new report, titled “Cities at Work: Progressive State Policies to Rebuild the Middle Class,” which includes more than 100 recommendations for how cities can blaze the trail toward a more equitable and prosperous future.
