The GOP today begins its quadrennial efforts to hide its extremist agenda behind a veneer of moderation and incessant reminders about 9/11. But make no mistake about the real conservative vision for America: permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest masquerading as an "economic growth and jobs" program; radical efforts to privatize Social Security and cut important social programs labeled as the "ownership society"; and unilateral action and an Iraq model of foreign policy wrapped in deceptive language about "promoting democracy and freedom," and "transforming the greater Middle East."
- Pushing irresponsible tax cuts and saddling younger generations with trillions of dollars in debt is not moderate. Three rounds of tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans did nothing to stimulate the economy, create good paying jobs, and lift more Americans into the middle class. Now the Bush administration and its congressional allies want to make the tax cuts permanent thus ensuring that younger workers will be paying off the administration's irresponsible fiscal policies for decades.
- Threatening to dismantle Social Security and cut support for the elderly is not moderate.
Replacing parts of Social Security with individual retirement accounts is the first step in killing the only secure retirement options for millions of elderly Americans. Private accounts are great tax havens for those can weather big downturns in the economy. But for everybody else, they offer illusory benefits with no guarantee of a safe and secure retirement.
- Promoting the war in Iraq as the best way to protect America and ensure global peace and stability is not moderate. In three quick years, the Bush administration squandered unprecedented world support for U.S. efforts to fight al Qaeda and international terrorism after 9/11. The administration chose to deceive Americans and the world community in order to go to war in Iraq – a decision that has proved costly and dangerously misguided in fighting the real terrorist threats around the globe. More of the same will not make us any safer.
