For conservative politicians living in the bubble of the GOP convention, the American economy has "turned the corner" and anyone who thinks otherwise is just a whiny "girly man" in the profound wisdom of Republican stalwart and multi-millionaire movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger. With poverty and inequality on the rise – and wages and affordable health care on the decline – these are surely comforting sentiments for millions of Americans.
- Economic reality is harsh for many Americans. As the president talks up the economy, millions of Americans must make do with scarce jobs; declining wages and benefits; rising costs and health care premiums; few savings; and mounting debt. Continuing its pattern of economic indifference, the White House was silent on the latest economic news showing a rise in poverty rates and the number of Americans without health insurance.
- Tax and budget policies designed by and for the wealthy and corporate interests do nothing to increase opportunities for the middle class. Massive supply-side tax cuts and uncompetitive subsidies for corporate America have failed – as they did in the 1980's – to trickle down into any meaningful opportunities for middle and working class Americans.
- Ongoing fiscal irresponsibility by conservative leaders threatens long term economic growth and opportunity. The president's economic program has needlessly produced an undeniable fiscal crisis. With the government facing projected cumulative deficits of nearly $5 trillion over the next ten years, our ability to fund education, health care, research and development, the military, and homeland security lies in serious jeopardy.
