The truth about Iraq is now bubbling out directly from the mouths of those who created the mess. With no weapons of mass destruction found; no Iraq-al Qaeda link uncovered; no post-war plan to secure the country; and few meaningful allies to share the burdens, top Bush administration officials are speaking candidly about Iraq.
- Ambassador Bremer now says, "We never had enough troops on the ground." The former official in charge of the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq stated yesterday that the administration's efforts in Iraq were hampered from the beginning due to an inadequate number of troops. The failure to plan for post-war security "established an atmosphere of lawlessness" according to Bremer that made it nearly impossible to secure the nation.
- Defense Secretary Rumsfeld now says there was no "strong, hard evidence" of an Iraq-al Qaeda link. Secretary Rumsfeld admitted yesterday at the Council on Foreign Relations that the administration's claims on the link were false. Recognizing his damaging moment of truthfulness, Rumseld quickly backtracked claiming that he had been "misunderstood."
- Vice President Cheney continues to deceive the American people with false and unproven allegations about an Iraq-al Qaeda link. All of Cheney's claims about this supposed link have proven false. Just today, a CIA report requested by Cheney blows apart his most significant claim that Saddam harbored a top al Qaeda operative. "There is no conclusive evidence that the [Iraqi] regime harbored terrorist Abu Musab al Zarqawi," the report states. The CIA report comes on top of the 9/11 Commission's conclusion that there was no "collaborative relationship" between al Qaeda and Saddam.
