Policy Analyst, Human Rights, Development, and Democracy

Summary

The Policy Analyst for Human Rights, Development, and Democracy on the National Security and International Policy team is responsible for researching and writing on issues including, but not limited to, U.S. policy on human rights, sustainable development, the rise of authoritarian populism, and defense of democratic values abroad. The position also requires project management and administrative work related to conference planning and events. These tasks include event and meeting coordination, travel arrangements, budgeting, reimbursement management, and logistics.

Please note this temporary position will end on May 31, 2020.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct original quantitative and qualitative research and analysis related to human rights, development, populism, and related issues. This will include conducting literature reviews; drafting talking points, columns, papers, charts, and tables; occasional data crunching; and proofreading, fact-checking, and editing documents.
  • Draft reports, issue briefs, and columns on human rights, development, democracy, and other issues as needed.
  • Manage projects—including conferences, convenings, and events—and handle associated logistical planning and administrative needs.
  • Develop innovative program and policy ideas.
  • Maintain and enhance expertise in assigned areas of responsibilities.
  • Develop and coordinate high-level meetings and public events.
  • Perform administrative duties, including record keeping, logistical planning and support, independent outreach for fundraising purposes, and developing innovative program ideas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Minimum of a master’s degree in international development, international affairs, human rights, peace building, political science, or a related field.
  • At least four years of relevant work experience in human rights, development, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct original research and writing, such as a body of published work.
  • Advanced knowledge of human rights and international development is required.
  • Ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment and manage grant deliverables.
  • Ability to multitask and work well under tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
  • Nonprofit, both 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) organizations, or think tank experience is a plus.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70.
