Campaign Manager, Energy and Environment War Room

Summary

American Progress is seeking a highly motivated and organized professional with a strong advocacy and organizing background and an understanding of strategic communications to serve as its Campaign Manager for the Energy and Environment War Room, which is the Energy and Environment policy team’s communications and advocacy staff.

The Campaign Manager’s portfolio will focus on American Progress’ new State House to the White House climate policy initiative. The position will research policies and laws that state governments have adopted to fight climate change through direct outreach with state policymakers, coalitions, and more. The Campaign Manager will work to bring those policies to the attention of federal policymakers in Congress and federal agencies. In particular, the Campaign Manager’s work on the initiative will advocate for federal adoption of state-developed climate change policies that combat environmental injustice, create good-paying union jobs, and move the United States toward a 100 percent clean energy future. The individual will drive relationship-building, coalition engagement, and advocacy campaigns; support targeted congressional engagement; and develop and implement communications tactics, including storytelling. The Campaign Manager will also work with national and state partners, coalitions, policy experts, and community and advocacy organizations to make strategic connections, lift up state and local climate successes, and show how they can inform equitable and just nationwide policy action.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Senior Fellow leading the State House to the White House initiative in the development and implementation of a strategy and work plan to achieve its objectives.
  • Follow the local, state, and national political and policy conversation regarding energy and climate change and make strategic recommendations for American Progress’ engagement.
  • Cultivate and foster productive working relationships with partner organizations and individuals at the national and state levels who support climate action, with a particular focus on advancing the team’s existing partnerships with environmental justice organizations and labor unions.
  • Partner with state-level advocates to drive climate messaging in their states, elevate climate messaging to the federal level, and coordinate with American Progress’ policy teams on appropriate products.
  • Amplify the stories of state partners, advocates, and community members through work with the Energy and Environment story bank, including storyteller vetting and written and video products.
  • Represent American Progress in coalition meetings and on conference calls.
  • Plan, support, and host coalition meetings and convenings with diverse partners to share ideas and identify key lessons learned on climate action from the state and local level.
  • Draft agendas, meeting materials, and documents to support the initiative and help track information on key state-level climate policies and programs.
  • Develop persuasive messaging and communications in the form of talking points, social media, and other digital assets to further the initiative’s goals.
  • Conduct targeted outreach to members of Congress and staff to educate and share ideas from the states and connect state- and local-level partners and organizations with allies on the Hill.
  • Support the drafting and publication of written products through research, message development, and strategic dissemination.
  • Continuously track progress on grant-funded work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and at least three years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Prior experience in candidate or issue advocacy campaigns. At least one cycle of electoral or independent campaign experience is preferred.
  • Prior experience working with environmental justice groups and/or on environmental justice issues is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with energy or environmental issues.
  • Commitment to environmental justice principles, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to make strategic connections between external partners, facilitate sharing of ideas, and plan convenings and coalition meetings—all with minimal oversight.
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and seeks direction as needed.
  • Experience operating in high-stakes environments that require producing high-quality, accurate products under tight deadlines.
  • Superb research and writing ability and ability to plan ahead and set priorities.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals, particularly equitable and just action to tackle the climate crisis that improves people’s lives, especially those who have been or will be disproportionately affected by toxic pollution, climate impacts, and shifting industries.
  • Successful at developing the connections and relationships necessary to make advocacy efforts more effective, in particular by supporting the team’s partnerships with environmental justice organizations. This includes utilizing one-on-one, small, and large group meetings.
  • Ability to search out new and creative ways to share American Progress’ products and ideas; find new levers to pull in running advocacy campaigns; and otherwise demonstrate a creative and nimble approach to tackling challenges.
  • Enjoys working strategically and casts an analytical eye to opportunities for lifting up state messages; engages in conversations that further climate change policy debates and political opportunities; and knows how to direct messages at intended audiences. The Campaign Manager will have an eye for which connections and new workstreams will advance the team’s strategic narratives.
  • Ability to handle multiple deadlines, including turning around unexpected work quickly and professionally. The candidate must bring a can-do attitude and a willingness to take on new challenges.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70 with a starting salary of $56,000.
