Research Assistant for Europe, National Security and International Policy

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Research Assistant on the National Security and International Policy (NSIP) team. The Research Assistant will assist the Europe team and the Global Progress team within NSIP by working on a wide range of Europe and international progressive policy issues. In addition, the Research Assistant will conduct research and related tasks on a variety of broader national security and foreign policy issues and support the general work of the NSIP team. The Research Assistant will also carry out administrative tasks and other duties as directed. This is a limited-term position through December 2022 with the possibility of extension.

This position calls for a highly organized, detail-oriented, and responsible individual on whom NSIP staff can rely to work independently and deliver high-quality administrative and research support, including quantitative analysis. Successful research assistants demonstrate an ability to multitask, set priorities in a fast-paced environment, and manage important communications on behalf of the NSIP team. The ideal candidate will have excellent research and organizational skills and pay careful attention to deadlines and follow-up communications. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact well with high-level policy professionals, both internally and externally, are important. Fluency in a European language other than English and/or experience living and working in Europe are strongly preferred.


  • Provide research support on key policy areas, including analyzing datasets, reading and summarizing existing research, reviewing federal legislation, and more.
  • Coordinate projects, events, scheduling, and travel, as well as administrative, research, and writing support as needed.
  • Prepare outlines and/or first drafts of policy memos, talking points, charts, issue briefs, reports, op-eds, blog posts, and other briefing materials.
  • Provide operational support to the team, including by assisting in the coordination and planning of public and private meetings, events, and travel; processing and filing forms; and providing other administrative support to assist with the management of the team, including drafting and tracking grant reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • At least one year of relevant work experience.
  • General knowledge of Europe policy, foreign interference, and NATO policy issues with a demonstrated interest in U.S. foreign policy toward Europe.
  • General knowledge and interest in international progressive politics and diplomacy, public polling, and coalition building.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills and strong critical thinking and writing skills.
  • Experience planning, supporting, and managing multiday conferences or events with high-level principals, such as student conferences, internship programs, etc.
  • Comfortable traveling to Europe and supporting international delegations and senior leadership with travel and logistics from American Progress and partner organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well on a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Fluency in a European language other than English and/or experience living and working in Europe strongly preferred.
