In speaking about energy in his State of the Union address last month, President Barack Obama called for “an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy, a strategy that’s cleaner, cheaper, and full of new jobs.”
That challenge from the president comes amid changes in the coal, natural gas, and petroleum sectors that are increasing pressures to export fuels that are homegrown in the United States or refined here. The prospect of significant increases in exports of U.S. coal, liquified natural gas, and refined products made from tar sands oil transported via pipeline from Canada is increasingly a subject of heated debate.
This moderated conversation and panel discussion that follows will delve into fossil fuel export questions ranging from the impact on domestic energy prices, to the possible environmental and social effects of export infrastructure, to what the proper balance of U.S. export strategy should be between raw materials and manufactured goods.
