During Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court hearings this week, Republican senators offered a consistent line when their Democratic colleagues argued the Affordable Care Act is at risk: There’s nothing to worry about.
Despite a pending court case that could strike down the ACA, Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) called it “outrageous” to suggest Barrett’s nomination would represent the ACA’s demise and Sen. John Neely Kennedy (R-La.) said it would be “preposterous” to think Barrett would rule against the law. Perhaps recognizing how unpopular it would be to remove protections for preexisting conditions and coverage for millions, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) argued in a campaign debate this week that “[n]o one believes the Supreme Court is going to strike down the Affordable Care Act.”
