American Progress has an immediate opening for a Policy Analyst or Senior Policy Analyst on the International Climate team in the Energy and Environment department. This position will lead research and analysis related to international climate mitigation, adaptation, and energy policy. The portfolio will include work on international climate finance and multilateral development bank reform; sectoral emissions mitigation, adaptation, climate, and security; and bilateral and multilateral climate diplomacy, among other issues. The ideal candidate will have prior experience working on one or several of these issue areas.
The ideal candidate will be a team player with strong writing and project management skills; an attention to detail; a commitment to addressing climate change and improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in climate policy; and a willingness to work on a wide range of policy issues. The position will report to senior leadership on the International Climate team, and the title will be determined by the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
This individual’s work will be driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country. - Develop, write, and manage the production and distribution of a variety of written products, such as reports, issue briefs, columns, and op-eds, that influence the international debate on key climate policy issues.
- Conduct both in-depth and rapid-response research and analysis on international climate issues.
- Analyze and track pending international climate or trade negotiations and federal legislative proposals, administrative policies, and regulatory changes.
- Elicit and provide feedback on written products for both internal and external partners.
- Engage in rapid response to policy developments as needed, including drafting memoranda, fact sheets, and social media posts.
- Provide research support for other members of the Energy and Environment department, including the Domestic Climate and Conservation Policy teams.
- Collaborate with other American Progress departments as appropriate, including identifying crosscutting issues and projects.
- Engage in issue-based coalitions and represent American Progress in external meetings with Capitol Hill staff, the Biden administration, diverse coalition partners, and media contacts to advance the organization’s work.
- Help embody a culture of justice, equity, and inclusion by performing tasks with these values at their core.
- Develop and maintain expertise in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; an advanced degree is a plus.
- At least three years of professional experience in climate policy or a related field for the Policy Analyst role. At least five years of professional experience in climate policy or a related field for the Senior Policy Analyst role. Education, internships, activist roles, and volunteer experience may all be taken into account.
- Experience in or understanding of how climate change and nature loss affect global, national, and human security. Background in national security or foreign assistance is a plus.
- Knowledge of international climate or environment policy issues, as well as the U.S. legislative and administrative policymaking process.
- Understanding of how climate and environment issues intersect with racism and economic and social inequality, and a passion for working to dismantle these systems.
- Research and analytical skills, with strong attention to detail. Quantitative skills, including the ability to work with large data sets and understand graphs and charts, is a plus.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate policy matters to a nonpolicy audience.
- Ability to independently manage projects from conception to completion, including independently planning and balancing projects and coordinating with internal and external partners.
- Ability to work under and meet deadlines in a team setting.
- Commitment to treating all partners with courtesy and respecting those of different cultural backgrounds.
- Understanding of and willingness to learn how power, privilege, and oppression manifest at the individual, interpersonal, and team levels.

The Policy Analyst position has a minimum salary of $61,000, and the Senior Policy Analyst position has a minimum salary of $68,000.
This position requires the candidate to be based in Washington, D.C. Current required in-office days for the Energy and Environment department are Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 and the levels of community spread and adjust plans as needed for in-office work.
