PRESS CALL: Gun Safety and Political Experts Discuss How the NRA Lost Last Night in Virginia

TODAY – WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. ET

Washington, D.C. — Virginia voters yesterday registered a resounding rejection of an extreme pro-gun ticket. In an election in which both sides spent more than $4 million in independent expenditures on the gun issue, the results represented a definite defeat of the NRA in its own backyard.

On a press call this morning, gun violence prevention advocates and political experts will join the Center for American Progress Action Fund to discuss what the Virginia election results mean in the context of future efforts to strengthen gun violence prevention laws in Virginia and in America.

WHO:

  • Arkadi Gerney, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress Action Fund
  • Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA-11)
  • Tom Jensen, Director, Public Policy Polling. PPP released a poll on Monday that showed that 47 percent of likely Virginia voters said that Ken Cuccinelli’s gun background check position made them less likely to vote for him, while only 18 percent said it made them more likely to vote for him.
  • Pia Carusone, Executive Director, Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun safety organization founded by Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly
  • Stu Loeser, spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Independence USA super PAC
  • Lori Haas, organizer, Virginians for Responsible Gun Laws; mother of Emily, who was shot twice and survived the Virginia Tech mass shooting
