Washington, D.C. — On Tuesday, April 8, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will host a discussion on human trafficking in the United States, particularly sex trafficking of children. The discussion—which will include distinguished panelists, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN); Malika Saada Saar, Executive Director of the Human Rights Project for Girls; and John Temple, Attorney-in-Charge for the New York County District Attorney’s Office Human Trafficking Program—will center around the innovative steps some members of the law enforcement community are taking to crack down on the traffickers who are perpetuating these heinous crimes, while providing victims with the protections they need to find a safe way out.
At any given moment, an estimated 27 million people around the world are victims of human trafficking. While many might inaccurately consider this a crime that is isolated in developing countries, there is a growing awareness of the human trafficking that occurs within the United States, particularly sex trafficking of children. But despite new levels of attention to the issue and a remarkable group of bipartisan leaders and advocates looking to address it, significant challenges remain to successfully combat sex trafficking of children in the United States, and law enforcement, social service agencies, and others in the judicial system often lack the tools necessary to crack down on sex trafficking of minors and provide victims with the support they need.
