Washington, D.C. — Zero-tolerance and other overly punitive school discipline policies have been undermining education for students of color and students with disabilities. Students subjected to expulsions and suspensions lose out on valuable instruction time. With reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, or ESEA—our nation’s primary law governing K-12 education—underway in Congress, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will host Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) for a keynote address on civil rights, inclusive school discipline practices, and ensuring academic success for students with disabilities. Sherrilyn Ifill of NAACP Legal Defense Fund will also deliver remarks, and a discussion with a panel of civil rights and disability policy experts will follow.
