Washington, D.C. — David Madland, Director, American Worker Project at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, and Anne Johnson, Executive Director, Generation Progress, will join the White House’s day-long Worker Voice Summit on Wednesday, October 7. The American Worker Project conducts research in order to increase the wages, benefits, and security of American workers and promote their rights at work, while Generation Progress works with and for young people to promote progressive solutions to key political and social challenges. Madland will participate in a breakout session about the voice of workers and the economy as a whole, while Johnson will participate in a breakout session about Millennials finding their voice.
Last month, the Center for American Progress—in conjunction with economists from Harvard University and Wellesley College—released new research suggesting that unions play a critical role in intergenerational mobility. The research revealed that that areas with higher union membership demonstrate more mobility, and children with union parents earn more than the children of nonunion parents, strongly indicating that policies that make it easier for workers to form unions and bargain collectively should be at the heart of any agenda to boost mobility and ensure an inclusive economy. According to the White House, the summit will explore ways to ensure that working Americans are fully sharing in the benefits of the broad-based economic growth that they are helping to create—with a focus on how workers can make their voices heard in the workplace in ways that are good for both workers and businesses. President Barack Obama will also deliver remarks and participate in a town hall with Coworker.org to start a conversation with workers, employers, unions, organizers, as well as other advocates and experts on how to energize a new generation of Americans to come together and recognize the potential power of their voice at work.
