PRESS CALL ADVISORY: CAP Action to Join Sen. Jeff Merkley to Unveil Major New Retirement Security Proposal

Center for American Progress Action Fund to release new analysis detailing the impact of a universal retirement savings option for American workers

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, David Madland, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, will join Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) for a press conference call to unveil major new retirement security legislation. Sen. Merkley will discuss how a retirement savings plan that is universal, portable, simple, and personal could fill a major gap in the current system and unveil a legislative proposal to put these ideas into action. Madland will discuss the findings of a new analysis that details the impact that setting up a universal retirement savings option would have on the financial security of Americans who do not otherwise have access to a retirement savings option through their employer.

Last year, the Center for American Progress released an issue brief that details the realities of the current retirement crisis facing American workers, concluding that a large share of Americans are saving nothing for retirement and that nearly one-third of nonretired Americans have no retirement savings or pension. The brief also found that families that are saving often have insufficient assets and that today’s households should increase their savings relative to prior generations but are not doing so.
