Washington, D.C. — On Friday, June 24, 2016, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) will join Greg Dotson of the Center for American Progress Action Fund and Gretchen Dahlkemper of Moms Clean Air Force to discuss a Center for American Progress brief, to be released that morning, looking at the pollution behind the lawsuit against the Clean Power Plan, or CPP. The new issue brief, “Suing and Spewing: The Massive Pollution Behind the Fight to Overturn the Clean Power Plan,” looks at the annual carbon pollution from power companies affiliated with the lawsuit. The issue brief comes nearly three years after President Barack Obama announced his Climate Action Plan in a 2013 speech at Georgetown University.
The CPP is a key piece of the president’s Climate Action Plan and was proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, in 2014. The plan sets the first-ever limits on carbon pollution from existing power plants and provides states flexibility in how they meet those reductions. The plan was finalized in August 2015. Soon thereafter, West Virginia and other states joined with power producers to sue the EPA in an effort to block the plan and avoid responsibility for cleaning up their acts.
