Washington, D.C. — At 11:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, August 11, 2016, Juliette Kayyem, former Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and author of Security Mom: An Unclassified Guide to Protecting Our Homeland and Your Home, will join Ken Gude, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, to discuss terrorism, hacking, the Zika virus, and other homeland security issues that are at play in the current U.S. presidential election.

This is the second National Security Briefing hosted by the National Security Leadership Alliance, and is intended to provide context to the complex national security issues in the U.S. Presidential election.

Homeland security is considered an all hazards industry that looks at threats to the homeland and minimizes their impact in order to help resilient communities stay safe. In this election, polls indicate that the presidential candidates are still neck-and-neck on issues of terrorism and homeland security. Moreover, fear has been a staple part of the political diet for the so-called security moms among the American electorate.

To make sense of these issues Kayyem will outline what she sees as the major trends in how the nation is looking at security in this election. Following her remarks, Kayyem will take questions.

Prior to serving as assistant secretary for intergovernmental affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Kayyem was Gov. Deval Patrick’s (D-MA) homeland security advisor. She has also served as a member of the National Commission on Terrorism, a legal advisor to U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, and a trial attorney, and counselor in the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Justice Department. She is currently the Robert and Renee Belfer Lecturer in International Security at the Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and founder of the strategic security consulting firm Kayyem Solutions.
The National Security Leadership Alliance, or NSLA, is led by Co-Chairs Madeleine Albright, Gen. John Allen, Tom Donilon, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), Eric Holder, Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), Leon Panetta, and Adm. James Stavridis, as well as vice chairs with unparalleled experience at the highest levels of civilian and military service. By providing policy-focused rapid response work, the NSLA promotes a progressive vision of national security that rejects a reckless use of American power and embraces our ability to lead the world toward peace, stability, justice, and opportunity.
