Washington, D.C. — At 11:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, August 18, 2016, Joe Cirincione, president of Ploughshares Fund and author of the new book Nuclear Nightmares: Securing the World Before It’s Too Late, will join Ken Gude, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, to discuss nuclear weapons and nonproliferation issues that are at play in the current U.S. presidential election.
This is the third National Security Briefing hosted by the National Security Leadership Alliance, or NSLA, and is intended to provide context to the complex national security issues in the U.S. presidential election.
Issues related to nuclear weapons have emerged as a key feature of this election campaign. The American people have grave concerns over Donald Trump’s temperament and capacity to sit atop the nuclear command structure. Trump has also proposed the alarming idea of actually increasing the number of nuclear weapons states and has said that the United States would be “better off” if more countries had nuclear weapons. Even a recent Fox News poll shows Americans trust Hillary Clinton more than Donald Trump by 22 points on making better decisions about nuclear weapons.
In order to make sense of these issues, Cirincione will outline what he sees as the major trends in how the nation is looking at nuclear weapons issues in this election. Following his remarks, Cirincione will take questions.
Prior to joining Plougshares, Cirincione served as Vice President for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress and director for nonproliferation at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Cirincione worked for nine years in the U.S. House of Representatives on the professional staff of the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Government Operations. He is a regular commentator on major broadcast, print, and web media outlets. He is a member of Secretary of State John Kerry’s International Security Advisory Board and teaches at the graduate School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.
