PRESS CALL ADVISORY: Rep. Garcia, Construction Industry Owner, and Reconstruction Workers Discuss Outsized Role of TPS Holders in Natural Disaster Recovery Efforts

Washington, D.C. — While the Trump administration has taken steps to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nearly all of the 318,000 individuals protected by the program, new data show that states that have been devastated by recent natural disasters are home to thousands of TPS holders in construction occupations.

Following the release of CAP’s new fact sheet looking specifically at the important role that TPS holders are playing in rebuilding communities devastated by recent natural disasters, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will host a press call on Tuesday, March 5, at 11:00 a.m. ET with Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX), Stan Marek, CEO of MAREK, and recovery-area workers to talk about the work that TPS holders—many in specialized occupations and supervisory roles—are doing to help these communities get back on their feet.

With the U.S. House Judiciary Committee expected to hold a hearing on protecting Dreamers and TPS recipients the following day, Jesus Contreras—a Houston paramedic and DACA recipient who worked tirelessly in the Hurricane Harvey relief effort—will remind us why Congress must act to protect both TPS holders and Dreamers like himself.

Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX)
