EVENT ADVISORY: Building the Bench: Lieutenant Governors and Progressive Power

Washington, D.C. — On Tuesday, March 26, the Center for American Progress Action Fund will host Lt. Govs. Bethany Hall-Long (D-DE), Kathleen C. Hochul (D-NY), Howie Morales (D-NM), and Garlin Gilchrist (D-MI)—four of the country’s pre-eminent lieutenant governors—to discuss how their states are working to protect the environment, expand access to health care, promote economic development, and make government work for the people, not special interests.

The 2018 elections ushered in a wave of progressive leaders, including a number of new lieutenant governors. The new lieutenant governors come from nearly every corner of the country and represent a historically high level of diversity, with seven women, three African Americans, two Hispanic Americans, one Native American, and the first openly gay lieutenant governor in this country’s history. Their victories are transforming the bench progressives are building in the states—and the face of the progressive movement—for years to come.
