Washington, D.C. — Instead of taking the U.S. Supreme Court’s June ruling—which struck down the Trump administration’s first illegal attempt to try to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program—as an opportunity to stop attacking DACA beneficiaries, the administration lashed out at Dreamers once again. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a new memo directing officials to reject all new and pending DACA applications and requests for advance parole, as well as slashing the duration of future DACA renewals from two years of protection to only one.
This decision alone is designed to keep at least 300,000 young people from applying for protection, including 55,500 who would have aged into eligibility over the last nearly three years while the administration pursued its illegal attempt to end DACA.
According to data from the Center for American Progress, there are 23,990 DACA recipients who call Arizona home, and 54,900 individuals in the state live in households with DACA beneficiaries, including 10,400 U.S. citizen children who have a parent protected under DACA. Annually, DACA recipients and their households in the state of Arizona pay $250 million in taxes. They also pay $21 million in annual mortgage payments and $56.7 million in rent payments each year.
