PRESS CALL ADVISORY: Rep. John Yarmuth, Neera Tanden, and Kentucky Faith Leader To Discuss White House and Senate Failure To Pass a COVID Recovery Package

Louisville, KY — On Friday, August 14, Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) will join Center for American Progress Action Fund CEO Neera Tanden and Dr. F. Bruce Williams, senior pastor at Bates Memorial Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, to discuss how the White House and U.S. Senate’s failure to vote on a coronavirus recovery package is leaving Kentucky residents in limbo amid the greatest national economic and health crisis in recent history. Rep. Yarmuth, Tanden, and Williams will urge the White House and Senate majority to return to the negotiating table and work with the House majority, which has already passed a coronavirus recovery package, to bring relief to Kentucky residents and the American people.

According to recent calculations made by the Center for American Progress, the coronavirus pandemic has decimated Kentucky’s economy:

  • Hundreds of thousands of Kentucky residents have filed unemployment insurance claims since the beginning of March, underscoring the state’s economic volatility and families’ financial insecurity.
  • Since the pandemic started, the state has lost 28,500 public sector jobs. Without further federal aid to state and local governments, Kentucky is projected to lose 69,400 private and public sector jobs by the end of 2021.
  • 42 percent of Kentucky’s child care supply—or nearly 47,000 child care slots—are at risk of being permanently lost due to the pandemic, making it harder for parents to return to work and provide for their families.
