Washington, D.C. — For centuries, democracy—and all that it entails—has been a cornerstone of what it means to be an American. Since the earliest days of this country, people have fought to ensure that this ideal is accessible to everyone in the United States, not just the privileged few. In recent years, however, the United States has seen renewed attacks on voting rights and unprecedented efforts to sabotage elections, with cities and communities of color targeted most frequently. Lawmakers have the policy tools to secure U.S. democracy and build the kind of multiracial democracy embedded in the initial promise of this country, and federal legislation is necessary to help achieve this goal.
On January 14, please join the Center for American Progress Action Fund for the third installment of the “Securing Our Democracy” event series. CAP Action CEO Patrick Gaspard will be joined by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) and Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway (D) for a conversation on how to protect the freedom to vote and the integrity of U.S. elections. The conversation will focus on how mayors are pushing back on attacks on democracy and working to ensure equal access to the ballot—and the importance of baseline national standards to protect free and fair elections.
