Washington, D.C. — A new fact sheet from the Center for American Progress Action Fund’s Moscow Project shows how certain Republicans in Congress have acted as President Donald Trump’s accomplices throughout the Russia probe and have shielded the president from a thorough investigation. As Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team begins to issue indictments, an alarming number of congressional Republicans have sought to undermine and obstruct the investigation. The Moscow Project’s fact sheet illuminates the desperate efforts of these Republican members of Congress to protect the president and throw sand in the public’s eyes.
The fact sheet highlights specifically egregious behavior from many congressional Republicans—including Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC)—who could use their power to move the investigation forward but have not.
Republicans in Congress have:
- Slow-rolled the congressional investigations and blocked the establishment of congressional select committees and the creation of an independent commission.
- Worked with the White House to undermine and obstruct ongoing investigations.
- Refused to issue subpoenas and canceled meetings and hearings.
- Ignored warnings from the intelligence community.
- Succumbed to pressure from President Trump to hinder the investigations.
