RELEASE: CAP Action Memo: Trump’s Broken Promises to Florida Working Families

Washington, D.C. Tomorrow, President Donald Trump will travel to Sunrise, Florida, in Broward County to hold a “Welcome Home” event. Trump’s event follows his announcement that he will officially move his permanent residence from Trump Tower in Manhattan to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

In the past, Trump promised to lower drug prices, give Floridians great health care, and protect people with preexisting conditions. He also promised to rebuild deficient infrastructure and raise wages for working families.

In reality, the Trump administration has failed to deliver on these promises for his new home state, instead backing a lawsuit to take away health care for people with preexisting conditions; blocking minimum-wage increases; and abandoning efforts to fix miles of roads and structurally deficient bridges.

Learn more about President Trump’s top broken promises to Florida families here.

Health care

Promise: “Those with preexisting conditions will always get the quality coverage they need.” – Donald Trump, September 24, 2016

Reality: The Trump administration is trying to sabotage Americans’ health care by repealing the Affordable Care Act or toppling the law in the courts. If the Trump administration is successful:

Profits and wages

Promise: “I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created … our poorer citizens will get new jobs and higher pay and new hope for their life.” – Donald Trump, October 5, 2016

Reality: The Trump administration has taken away safeguards that ensure workers are paid overtime, protect retirees from exploitative financial advisers, and ensure that people pay less at the gas pump. As a result of the Trump administration’s policies, Floridians have seen:

Infrastructure

Promise: “I’m going to authorize $1 trillion in new public-private infrastructure. That is going to be so important.” – Donald Trump, Tampa, Florida, October 24, 2016

Reality: Despite the tremendous benefits that increased infrastructure spending would bring to local economies, transportation costs, and the quality of life in Florida, the Trump administration has abandoned efforts to make good on one of Trump’s signature promises.

  • A year’s worth of  the Trump administration’s tax cuts for the top 1 percent of Florida earners—$10.6 billion—would more than cover the cost of resurfacing all the roads in need of repair in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Port St. Lucie metropolitan areas.
  • The Trump administration proposed an infrastructure plan that actually cut federal funding and encouraged the privatization of public infrastructure and the expansion of highway tolls.
  • The Trump administration’s most recent budget called for cutting highway and public transportation programs by $171 billion over the next 10 years.

Taxes

Promise: “No one will gain more from these proposals than low- and middle-income Americans.” – Donald Trump, August 8, 2016

Reality: Most of the Trump administration’s $2 trillion tax cut goes to corporations and the rich. Many Florida families are getting stuck with the bill.

  • 545,880 Florida families paid more in taxes this year due to the Trump administration tax bill.
  • The average tax cut for the wealthiest 1 percent of Floridians was $98,480, while the bottom 80 percent of Floridians saw just a fraction of that.
