STATEMENT: House Democrats’ Immigration Bill Wisely Cribs Bipartisan Policy Recommendations from the House and Senate

Washington, D.C. – Today, Reps. Judy Chu (D-CA), Suzan DelBene (D-WA), Joe Garcia (D-FL), Steven Horsford (D-NV), and Jared Polis (D-CO)—representing key constituencies within the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives—introduced an immigration reform bill modeled on the bipartisan Senate-passed Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act and the Border Security Results Act of 2013, which was reported unanimously out of the House Homeland Security Committee. CAPAF Vice President for Immigration Policy Angela Maria Kelley released the following statement:

We applaud House Democrats for introducing a constructive and comprehensive solution for reforming our nation’s immigration laws. The bill draws from sensible bipartisan policy recommendations crafted by Democrats and Republicans and then passed by the Senate and the House Homeland Security Committee. Wisely, the bill is comprehensive and doesn’t cut corners. It includes a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants living in the country, robust border and interior enforcement, and updates to our legal immigration system that will supercharge our economy and keep families together. The bill represents an opening statement to what we hope becomes a bipartisan dialogue and ultimately a lasting solution on how to fix all parts of the immigration system. We urge Republicans to fire up, not shut down, reform’s prospects and move legislation to the Floor in the coming weeks.
