STATEMENT: CAP Action Executive Director Angela Maria Kelley on House Speaker John Boehner’s Resignation

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Action Fund Executive Director Angela Maria Kelley issued the following statement on House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) announcement of his resignation from Congress.

Speaker Boehner’s resignation speaks to the enormous challenge of leading today’s House Republicans, many of whom are more interested in holding the entire government hostage through political stunts than actually governing. Just yesterday in his address to Congress, Pope Francis called for civility from the nation’s policymakers, a sign of how toxic the climate has become.

The gridlock in Congress has crippled the institution and led to a constant state of inaction on measures that would strengthen the middle class and grow the economy. With yet another impending government shutdown, today is a stark reminder that progress will require a speaker willing to stand up to the extreme wing of the Republican Party.
