STATEMENT: CAP’s Winnie Stachelberg on the North Carolina GOP’s Refusal to Repeal H.B. 2

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Action Fund Executive Vice President for External Affairs Winnie Stachelberg issued the following statement today after North Carolina reneged on their deal with the Charlotte City Council to fully repeal H.B. 2, which infamously mandated discrimination against transgender North Carolinians while rolling back city and state protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, race, gender, and religion:

The North Carolina GOP should be ashamed. Instead of listening to North Carolina voters, the North Carolina Republicans are taking a page out of the Trump playbook and going back on their deal—first by proposing only a partial repeal of H.B. 2 and then by failing to take any action at all. They betrayed the voters who resoundingly rejected H.B. 2 at the polls; they betrayed the workers who’ve lost jobs and wages because of this bill; and they betrayed their transgender citizens who face state-mandated discrimination every day that H.B. 2 remains on the books. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, North Carolinians deserve better: They deserve a full repeal of H.B. 2 and statewide comprehensive nondiscrimination protections today.
