STATEMENT: Senate Republicans Side With Trump and Insurance Companies Over People With Preexisting Conditions

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate rejected a Congressional Review Act resolution to block the Trump administration’s rule promoting the sale of junk insurance, which allows insurers to discriminate against people with preexisting conditions. Topher Spiro, vice president for Health Policy at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:

Today’s vote is just the latest example of Senate Republicans putting their allegiance to President Donald Trump and insurance companies over the best interests of their most vulnerable constituents. 135 million nonelderly Americans have preexisting conditions such as diabetes and depression. Enabling insurers to deny them coverage and sell plans that don’t cover the care they need exposes them to immense health and financial risk.

Last year, the public sent a loud and clear message to Washington: Every American—regardless of their health condition—deserves access to care that doesn’t break the bank. Republican declarations of support for people with preexisting conditions fall on deaf ears when they continue to vote against their interests and support a health care repeal lawsuit that would turn the clock back on their access to care.
