STATEMENT: From Virginia to Kentucky, Republicans Suffer Resounding Defeat for Working To Deny Access to Health Care

Washington, D.C. — Today marks Election Day in Virginia, Kentucky, and other municipalities across the country. Returns currently predict Democrats will take full control of the government of Virginia after retaking majorities in both houses of the General Assembly. Kentucky voters voted out their current governor to elect the state’s attorney general, Democrat Andy Beshear, as the state’s next chief executive. Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement on the results:

From Kentucky to Virginia, tonight’s results are a resounding victory for Democrats across the country—and a defeat for Republican politicians seeking to deny health care to the American people.

Democrats proved that they can win anywhere when they compete, give voters a reason to turn out, and fight for the issues that matter the most to working families—including protecting access to health care, investing in education, and taking concrete steps to end gun violence.

There’s a lot of important work to do to make sure voters all over the country know how President Donald Trump and his allies have turned their back on our most vulnerable. Tonight’s results suggest that voters are listening and that health care is an acute concern for the American people of all political stripes.
