STATEMENT: Neera Tanden Applauds House Passage of the PRO Act

Washington, D.C. — Today, the House passed the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. The PRO Act addresses America’s rising economic inequality by strengthening federal laws that protect workers’ right to join a union. Following the passage, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:

It’s no accident that this era of extreme income inequality comes after decades of conservative attacks on workers’ right to organize. Unions are critical to creating an economy that actually works for its workers. Unions are shown to improve wages and strengthen benefits, and they are a powerful vehicle to move workers into the middle class and keep them there.

The PRO Act will go a long way toward protecting workers’ rights by creating enforceable penalties for companies that violate these rights, expanding collective bargaining, and strengthening workers’ access to fair union elections and requiring corporations to respect the results. I applaud the House for passing the PRO Act.
