STATEMENT: CAPAF’s Neera Tanden Calls on Postmaster General to Resign Over Actions that Undermine Mail Service

Washington, D.C. – Center for American Progress Action Fund CEO Neera Tanden today called for the resignation of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy amid reports that he has taken steps to disrupt mail service ahead of the November election:

President Donald Trump’s handpicked postmaster general—a partisan fundraiser with no postal experience—has been taking steps to slow down mail processing and delivery. These actions are not only hurting small businesses, those who depend on medications being delivered promptly, and millions of other Americans, they will also make it harder for Americans to vote safely by mail during a raging pandemic. This appears to be a blatant effort to sabotage the U.S. Postal Service in ways that will disrupt mail-in voting across the country.

The president himself has admitted that his goal is to undermine the Postal Service to prevent increased voting by mail, saying in an interview that if the post office doesn’t get more funding “that means they can’t have universal mail-in voting. They just can’t have it.” Louis DeJoy also has personal financial interests with a Postal Service contractor that pose a major conflict of interest—yet another reason he has no business running the agency. It’s time for DeJoy to resign before his disruptive actions cause untold harm to millions of Americans. He must be replaced with an experienced official who is committed to keeping mail delivery reliable.
