STATEMENT: Infrastructure Deal Is a Credit to Democrats’ Bipartisan Efforts—Now Time to Build Back Better

Washington, D.C. — Today the White House and a bipartisan group of senators announced that they’d reached an agreement on a proposed bipartisan infrastructure bill. Following the announcement, John Podesta, founder and chair of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:

The bipartisan infrastructure deal is a significant achievement for President Joe Biden and Democratic senators who did the painstaking work to reach across the aisle, against all odds, after years of scorched earth partisan politics from President Donald Trump. It would address one of the many core challenges that has held back American economic growth for decades, creating hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs, especially for those Americans who have often been left behind in today’s economy.

With Democrats having worked in good faith to find common ground with Republicans, there is no time to waste on addressing the other great economic challenges that have held back American families. The build back better agenda would extend the biggest middle-class family tax cut in history, while Republican leadership wants to end it and raise taxes on families. It would have huge corporations and the super rich pay their fair share. Meanwhile, Republicans have drawn a red line against having billionaires pay a penny more. It would help families with child care costs, home care costs, health care costs, prescription drug costs, and paid leave. Reforming our broken immigration system will make our economy even stronger. And it would create countless new jobs in clean energy, putting America to work to stop our country from frying before our eyes as a result of climate change.

This bipartisan deal is half the battle in creating an economy that works for all, and it should be passed with input from the House of Representatives. But real celebration can only come after both this and the build back better agenda are both passed.
