Trump’s colleagues in corruption.

Posted on

Even as House Democrats bring some long-overdue accountability to Trump, his allies in the Senate and the House minority are still enabling his worst, most offensive, most corrupt impulses.

Trump’s presidency is not the story of one immature, narcissistic, unfit man. Trump is able to do such damage because Republicans are his biggest enablers.

Right now, the GOP is standing by largely silent as Trump:

  • Attacks Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation
  • Spits in the face of the U.S. Constitution and the separation of powers with his illegal national emergency declaration
  • Calls the media the “absolute Enemy of the People and our Country itself”

If Trump couldn’t rely on his cronies in Congress, he’d be reduced to angry tweets and rants on the campaign stage.

As House Democrats hold Trump and his administration accountable, the GOP does nothing but defend the president and give him permission slips for even worse behavior. Republicans continue to give Trump a platform, a legislative agenda, a vehicle through which to ram far-right judges onto the courts, and a free pass to be as offensive, divisive, and dangerous as possible.

THINKING CAP: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A PROGRESSSIVE PROSECUTOR?

What does progressive prosecution look like in practice?

Kim Foxx joins Thinking CAP to discuss. Foxx, the state’s attorney for Cook County, Illinois, is the first black woman to be elected to that position, presiding over Chicago and its neighboring towns—and she’s already begun shaking up business as usual. Her goal? Get to the root causes of violence and crime; bring transparency to the prosecutor’s office; and bridge the gulf of trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
