Washington, D.C. —This morning, in the dead of night, the Texas Senate passed H.B. 4, a discriminatory bill to redraw Texas’ congressional district maps with the intent of yielding 5 new Republican-held seats. With this vote, the bill now heads to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk and appears set to become law. Neera Tanden, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:
Donald Trump instructed Texas Republicans to pursue a mid-decade partisan gerrymander to preempt Americans from holding him accountable for his unpopular policies that are driving up costs and kicking people off their health care. Unfortunately, Texas Republicans fell in line, putting Trump’s political interests over the interests of Texans. By giving voters a say about how to respond to this unprecedented attack on our democracy, states like California are rightly refusing to bend the knee in the face of the president’s corrupt power grab. Until Congress passes a federal law to ban partisan and racial gerrymandering, it’s vital that all leaders follow their example.
