STATEMENT: Announcement of Clinic Closures in Rural Virginia Is the Latest Evidence of Devastation Wrought by Trump’s Big Bill

Washington, D.C. — Today, Augusta Medical Group announced the closure of three clinics across rural Virginia in light of the practice’s response to President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Natasha Murphy, director of Health Policy at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:

Donald Trump and congressional Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act is raising health care costs and wreaking havoc on rural health care providers, and today’s announcement of three clinic closures across western Virginia is just the latest evidence. The law, which Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) touted as including “so many great things,” cuts Medicaid by nearly $1 trillion over the next decade and, when coupled with changes to the Affordable Care Act, will result in roughly 350,000 Virginians losing health coverage. Republicans promised to make America affordable and healthy, but instead they’ve put countless Americans at risk of losing their doctor, health coverage, and loved ones—all to give more tax breaks to billionaires.
