STATEMENT: Republican Demands to Increase Health Care Costs Risk a Government Shutdown, Says CAP Action’s Neera Tanden

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass a partisan continuing resolution to fund the government through November 21. The Senate is slated to take up this legislation imminently. However, news reports suggest that the bill will likely lack the 60 votes needed to pass and be sent to the president’s desk. In response, Neera Tanden, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:

Congressional Republicans’ insistence on defunding Americans’ health care is pushing this country to the brink of a painful government shutdown. They have punished the American people with higher costs, particularly for health care, and refuse to stand up for the public, as the administration unilaterally withholds funding for cancer research and education for students with disabilities. The Republican spending bill is a tacit endorsement of the chaos we’ve already suffered over the past eight months. If it goes through, millions of Americans’ health care premiums will skyrocket by thousands of dollars starting in January, and these higher costs will cause millions to lose coverage. Democrats are rightly taking a stand and making clear that this is unacceptable.
