Summary
American Progress is seeking a mission-driven, energetic, and strategic Human Resources Generalist with experience in nonprofit, unionized environments. Reporting to the Associate Director of Human Resources, the ideal candidate will work across all HR functions, including recruiting, onboarding, training, benefits administration, HRIS management, and employee and union relations. This role requires outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, sound judgment, and an unwavering commitment to confidentiality while supporting the organization’s mission and values.
Responsibilities:
- Administer HR policies and ensure legal compliance while supporting recruitment, onboarding, training, and benefits administration.
- Provide HR system support, troubleshooting, and training while processing payroll changes and maintaining accurate employee records.
- Manage employee leave programs, accommodations, and investigations with recommended corrective actions.
- Lead HR projects including reports and analytics, engagement initiatives, policy updates, system upgrades, and process automation opportunities.
- Configure, test, and implement HR system modules, workflows, and enhancements.
- Manage system security, user roles, and permissions while partnering with Payroll, Benefits, and Information Technology Services for seamless integrations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum five years of relevant professional experience.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and sound judgment.
- Excellent verbal communication skills to engage effectively with all organizational levels.
- Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation appropriately.
- Strong prioritization and task management skills with clear status communication.
- Demonstrated planning, organizational, and follow-through abilities to ensure timely, efficient task completion.
- Problem-solving skills with ability to take prompt action to overcome obstacles.
- Experience with HRIS, applicant tracking, and payroll systems.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy of employee information.
- Commitment to organizational mission and goals.

This position is not represented by a union and has a compensation range of $64,000–$76,800. Final salary may be above the posted range commensurate with experience.
