STATEMENT: The Trump Administration Is Once Again Playing Politics With Puerto Ricans’ Lives, Says CAPAF’s Erin Cohan

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Trump administration announced the release of long-overdue funding to rebuild Puerto Rico’s energy grid and other priorities three years after Hurricane Maria devastated the island. In response, Erin Cohan, chief of staff and vice president at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, issued the following statement:

The funding being announced by the Trump administration today was approved by Congress under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which was enacted in February 2018. It is the height of cynicism to wait until 46 days before the election to make this announcement. The Trump administration has delayed and restricted reconstruction funding for Puerto Rico and has insulted Puerto Ricans all throughout the recovery process. Puerto Ricans know better and will not be fooled by this cruel attempt to politicize the tragedy of Hurricane Maria. This is Trump’s Katrina, and no amount of gaslighting will change that.
